How is a Lab Created Moissanite gemstone measured?

Moissanite is 13% less dense than diamond, meaning that with millimeter size (length and width) being equal, a Moissanite gemstone will be slightly lighter than a diamond of a similar shape. Hence, Moissanite is marketed by millimeter (mm) size to ensure proper fits in traditionally calibrated mountings, though carat weight and an approximate diamond equivalent are also typically noted for each gemstone.

Which color scale is used to grade Lab Created Moissanite?

Do Lab Created Moissanite gemstones have inclusions?

Lab Created Moissanite is produced by crystalizing organic elements in a controlled environment that mimics nature. Tiny, needle-like inclusions invariably develop during the growing process but only those that are at least equivalent to the GIA VS grade for diamonds are made available for distribution. These inclusions can only been seen under magnification and do not impact Moissanite’s appearance or optical properties.

How durable is Moissanite?

Moissanite is superbly durable. Its ability to resist scratching and abrasion measures 9.5 on the Mohs harness scale – making it a close second only to diamond, and more than twice the hardness of cubic zirconia (CZs). Moissanite’s crystalline structure is held together with strong covalent bonding similar to diamonds but it won’t cleave in a direction of structural weakness the way diamonds can. That means Moissanite’s toughness, or ability to resist breaking or chipping, outranks diamond. Moissanite is color-stable and virtually impervious to the extreme heat, temperature variations and chemical solutions used during jewelry manufacturing processes and repair or modification work. What is the difference between a diamond and a Lab Created Moissanite?

Diamonds and Lab Created Moissanite are both crystalline structures that can be cut into beautiful, brilliant gemstones. Diamond occurs naturally and is mined from the earth. Lab Created Moissanite is grown in a laboratory. Both materials are extremely hard and, because of their hardness, can be polished to the finest of lusters. Diamond contains natural fractures, which reduces its ability to withstand hard impacts and may result in chips or overall breakage. Lab Created Moissanite does not contain natural fractures and is more averse to hard impacts. Both gemstones are known for their “brilliance” and “fire,” with Lab Created Moissanite being slightly more brilliant (10%) and having 2.36 times more fire than diamond. In terms of weight, diamond is slightly heavier than Lab Created Moissanite for a similarly sized gemstone. In terms of cost, diamond is about X times more expensive than a similarly sized Lab Created Moisanite.
